Small, but dangerous! This asteroid will come terrifyingly close to Earth TODAY

The dangerous asteroid 2022 SB is on its way to approaching Earth terrifyingly close. This is what NASA said.

There are three asteroids lined up to get very close to Earth, NASA’s JPL tracker warns. One of them is the size of a giant building at 390 feet, while another has a plane 180 feet in diameter. One of the most terrifying of these, however, is the Asteroid 2022 SB. No, it’s not size that poses a threat to Earth, as it measures 36 feet, but its terrifying proximity to Earth that is of concern. According to NASA’s asteroid data tracking page, asteroid 2022 SB will fly past Earth today Sept. 18 at a chillingly short distance of just 724,000 miles, which is just three times the distance between Earth and the moon — about 239,000 miles.

NASA says the asteroid will travel at a whopping speed of 17.89 per second. To detect terror in advance, the Center for NEO Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory maintains an impact risk assessment of all near-Earth objects that will come relatively close to Earth. NASA’s JPL has given the label of potentially dangerous objects to all space rocks that approach within 4.6 million miles of Earth and have a size greater than about 150 meters. Based on this, the asteroid is called a “potentially dangerous asteroid.” Are we in danger?

NASA says the asteroid will fly past Earth without hitting it as long as it stays in its current orbit. Also, there’s nothing in the asteroid’s way that could throw it off course to send it straight to Earth. However, scientists will be keeping a close eye on it.

How NASA Tracks Asteroid Terror

Some of the greatest technologies developed by mankind are behind the tracking of this asteroid. NASA explained that objects near Earth are basically observed using optical and radio telescopes to know their size, shape, rotation and physical composition. “Some of the most detailed characterization data is obtained for NEOs approaching Earth close enough to be observed with planetary radar conducted by radio telescopes at NASA’s Deep Space Network and the National Science Foundation’s Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico,” NASA revealed.
