TikTok, the short video sensation that is among the most downloaded apps in the world, unveiled a new feature on Thursday that encourages people to post candid photos or videos of themselves at random times every day.

The feature, called TikTok Now, follows the recent success of BeReal, an authenticity-focused social media platform that requires people to take a photo of themselves every day within a two-minute time limit. Founded in 2020, the simple design and spontaneity of BeReal has appealed to users looking for a new alternative to traditional social media. TikTok, owned by the Chinese ByteDance Ltd., is adding the ability to post 10-second videos in addition to still images.

“TikTok Now invites you and your friends to record what you’re currently doing with the front and back cameras of your device,” the company said in a blog post on Thursday. This feature allows people to “get amused and connect with others on TikTok” and share their “most authentic moments with the people who matter most”.

TikTok isn’t the only company looking to replicate the rising popularity of the startup BeReal. Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms Inc., is testing a new feature called IG Candid, which also involves taking a timed photo and Snap Inc. also introduced a dual-camera feature that allows people to capture multiple perspectives at once, but it doesn’t require a timed post.
