The U.S. government partners with the people of Afghanistan and supports them in a number of ways, State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a regular news conference Wednesday. During the briefing, Price went on to say that the US, in its humanitarian efforts, has helped the people of Afghanistan through its leadership and also provided more than $1.1 billion in aid that bypasses the Taliban.
“We’ve made a very clear decision that the U.S. government is a partner to the people of Afghanistan. We support the people of Afghanistan. We do that in a number of ways. We do that through our humanitarian leadership.” aid that gives more than $1.1 billion to the Afghan people in a way that bypasses the Taliban…that goes directly to the Afghan people,” he said.
The State Department spokesman also said the US has consistently spoken out for the Afghan people and their rights, as well as for the women of Afghanistan.
On Monday, the US said it is reviewing its approach and engagement with the Taliban in the context of many human rights violations taking place in Afghanistan under the heinous regime and is actively evaluating with allies and partners to take the next appropriate steps towards it.
Price stressed in a press briefing that the US remains the world’s largest humanitarian service provider to the people of Afghanistan and does not provide any support to the Taliban.
When asked about former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s book, Price responded by saying, “He expresses opinion as a private individual as his right.”
In his new memoir titled “Never Give an Inch, Fighting for the America I Love,” Pompeo describes a conversation with the North Korean leader during his first trip to Pyongyang on March 30, 2018, ahead of the US-North summit. Korea that three months later.
Pompeo also notes how India and Pakistan were on the brink of nuclear war in 2018 and the US had to step in to de-escalate the situation. The former US Secretary of State claimed that the world was unaware of the situation between India and Pakistan.
“I don’t think the world quite knows how close the rivalry between India and Pakistan came to a nuclear blowout in February 2019,” Pompeo wrote in his memoir.
In response to a media question about the war between Russia and Ukraine and the delivery of Abrams tanks to Kiev, Ned Price stated that every piece of the security system provided by the US is for the self-defense of Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that he would deliver 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, overturning the government’s longstanding opposition to Kiev’s requests for the highly advanced but maintenance-intensive vehicles, according to CNN.
Since Biden has given his approval for the vehicles to be sent, the 31 Abrams will make up an entire Ukrainian tank battalion.
