Assam CM’s New Barb Against Rahul After Saddam Hussein’s Comment

Days after comparing the appearance of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that if the Wayanad MP shaves his beard, he will look like India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

“I have not said anything about his (Rahul Gandhi) appearance. I just said that over time your face will look like Saddam Hussein’s, but if you shave your beard, you will look like Nehru. In an attempt to troll me, Congress itself made my comment about (Congress MP) Rahul Gandhi, comparing his beard to Saddam Hussain’s, viral,” ANI quoted Sarma as saying.

At a rally in Ahmedabad last week, Assam CM Sarma spoke about the appearance of Rahul Gandhi and said that the leader now looks a lot like Saddam Hussain.

“I just saw that his appearance has also changed. I said in a TV interview a few days ago that there is nothing wrong with his new look. But if you need to change the look, at least make it like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel or even Jawaharlal Nehru. It’s better if it looks like Gandhiji. But why is your face turning into Saddam Hussein?” This is because Congress culture is not closer to Indian people. Their culture is closer to people who never understood India,” he claimed.

Senior congress leader Manish Tewari hit back, saying Sarma sounded like a “little troll”.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, said in a tweet, “It is really pathetic that today several TV channels were having debates about Assam CM’s obnoxious and totally unacceptable comments about Rahul Gandhi’s beard. This trivializes the Bharat Jodo Yatra.” “These channels need to do some serious self-introspection on what they have reduced themselves to,” said Ramesh.

Rahul Gandhi has been seen sporting a beard during the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra, a mass outreach initiative of the Congress.
