BJP undermines election commission independence, claims Mehbooba Mufti

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday accused the BJP of undermining the election commission to the point that it was no longer an independent body.

She claimed that the Election Commission has become “an extension” of the BJP. “It will do what the BJP says it should do.” “The Election Commission has been so undermined that it is no longer the independent body the country was proud of. Our election commissioners were invited by other countries to seek expert advice on how to conduct elections,” Mufti told reporters in the Khiram area of Anantnag district.

She said the Election Commission has not acted against the BJP, even though the ruling party has broken the laws.

“In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP leadership campaigned for religious-based polls. Muslims are openly threatened, but the election commission remains a silent spectator,” the PDP leader said.

The former prime minister said elections in Jammu and Kashmir will only be held if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approves them.

“How can I tell when elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir? That will be decided by the election commission and the commission will announce elections when the BJP says so,” she said.

As for governance, Mufti said the current government is determined to roll back.

“Look at our Kashmiri Pandits who have been camping in Jammu for several months. They demand that they be moved to Jammu until the situation in Kashmir improves. But the government sometimes stops their salaries and sometimes their rations,” she said.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president claimed that the BJP only exploited the pain of the Kashmiri pandits to gather votes in elections.

“They don’t care about anyone be it Kashmiri Pandits or anyone else. They just want to win elections,” she added.
