Congress on Wednesday released the first list of 55 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Meghalaya.

The party has expelled its Meghalaya unit chief Vincent H Pala from Sungai Saipung (ST) constituency. Pala is the incumbent Lok Sabha MP from Shillong.

Saleng A Sangma, who had resigned as NCP MLA and joined the Congress on 23 January, has been expelled from Gambegre (ST) constituency.

The first list of candidates was released on Wednesday following a meeting of the party’s Central Election Commission chaired by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

The polls for the elections to the 60-member Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya will be conducted in one phase on February 27. The counting of the votes will take place on March 2.
