Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge forms steering committee; Sonia, Manmohan under 47

In lieu of the congressional working committee, newly elected congressional chairman Mallikarjun Kharge formed a 47-member steering committee on Wednesday, which includes former party chairman Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Along with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, the Steering Committee also has other senior members of the party including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, AK Antony, Priyanka gandhi Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Ajay Maken, Ambika Soni, Avinash Pandey, Anand Sharma, Gaikhangam, Harish Rawat, Former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, Jitendra Singh, Kumari Seljia, Digvijay Singh, Tariq Anwar, Salman Khurshid, etc.

After Mallikarjun Kharge’s takeover as president of the congress, the existing members of the congress work committee resigned so that he can form a new team that would lead the party in the future.

The Congress Steering Committee also includes Raghubir Meena, PL Punia, Raghu Sharma, HK Patil, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Harish Chaudhary, Jai Prakash Aggrawal, KH Muniyappa, Manish Chatrath, Meira Kumar, etc.

Under the Congress rulebook, Mallikarjun Kharge’s election will be ratified at the party’s plenary session, which may be held in March-April next year.

It is worth noting that the Congress Working Committee is the highest decision-making body of Congress. The COR is formed after the plenary session. Until then, the steering committee will act as the CWC and make all major decisions for the party.

Under the party’s constitution, 11 members of the CWC will be nominated and the remaining 12 elected. In addition to the party chief, the committee will consist of the party’s leader in parliament.

By the time a full Congress Working Committee is formed next year, the 47-member Congress Steering Committee will act as the CWC.
