The pre-trial detention of TMC leader Anubrata Mondal was extended to November 25 by a special CBI court in Asansol in West Bengal on Thursday, at the prayer of the central agency investigating a cattle smuggling case.
Seeking bail on all terms, Mondal’s lawyer had stated in court that he is willing to remain in Kolkata if ordered.
Against the bail prayer, counsel for the CBI argued that Mondal is a very influential man and referred to a recent public statement by a minister in the state, in which the arrested party leader was compared to a tiger.
The special judge heard both sides and rejected Mondal’s bail request and extended his pre-trial detention for another 14 days, until November 25.
The CBI had arrested district president TMC Birbhum from his home in Bolpur on Aug. 11. He is currently housed in Asansol correctional home.
The court also authorized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to question Mondal in the correctional home about alleged money laundering proceeds from crimes related to the cattle smuggling case.
The ED said in her prayer that it would like to confront Mondal with the statements of his personal security guard Sehegal Hossain and daughter Sukanya.
