The DMK will file a review request against the Supreme Court ruling that upholds the EWS quota of 10 percent, a move praised by Congresswoman Karti Chidambaram.
The Secretary General of DMK and the Minister of Water Resources of Tamil Nadu, Duraimurugan, pointed to the 3-2 majority decision of the five-member SC bank and said it will affect the concept of equality provided for in the constitution.
“A review request will be made on behalf of the DMK to protect the social justice of 82 percent of the population of SC/STs, protect the basic infrastructure of the constitution and establish the reservation envisaged in the Mandal Commission,” he said in a release. .
Congressional MP Karti Chidambaram from Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu welcomed the DMK’s move.
“I welcome this initiative,” he said in a tweet, adding: “I am against #EWSQuota because it is exclusive and not comprehensive.” On Monday, both the BJP and Congress had tried to claim credit for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quotas.
Congressional secretary general Jairam Ramesh said the EWS reservation was the result of a process started in 2005-06 by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government to appoint the Sinho Commission, which issued its report. submitted in July 2010.
