Sources at Raj Bhavan confirmed that the ordinance to replace the governor as chancellor of varsities and appoint leading academics to that role has reached the agreement of Arif Mohammed Khan.
The CPI(M)-led government in Kerala sent its ordinance to remove the governor from the post of chancellor of universities in the state to the Raj Bhavan for approval on Saturday, days after the cabinet made a decision.
Sources at Raj Bhavan confirmed that the ordinance to replace the governor as chancellor of varsities and appoint leading academics to that role has reached the agreement of Arif Mohammed Khan.
However, Khan is unlikely to issue the ordinance any time soon, as the struggle between him and the state government over the issue has not yet ceased, sources added.
The government led by Pinarayi Vijayan had decided on Wednesday to release the ordinance, a move opposed by both Congress and the BJP.
The opposition parties have claimed that the cabinet decision was intended to turn Kerala’s universities into “communist centers”.
