My arrest was political, never seen such ‘vendetta politics’ before: Sanjay Raut

A day after his release from prison in a money laundering case, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut claimed on Thursday that his arrest was political and that no such kind of “vendetta politics” had been seen in the country before.

A special court in Mumbai on Wednesday granted bail to Rajya Sabha member Raut, saying his arrest was “illegal” and a “witch hunt”.

Raut, who was released from Mumbai’s Arthur Road prison on Wednesday after 100 days, told reporters on Thursday that he will soon meet with his party chief Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar.

The NCP is an ally of the Thackeray-led Sena faction.

Raut said he will also meet Maharashtra’s Deputy Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the coming days.

The MP said he will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of the Interior Amit Shah, but did not provide details.

“I was in solitary confinement, as were Savarkar and Tilak. Even my arrest was political and I used my time for a good cause. Whatever my celebration, my family and I had to endure… we suffered. My family has lost a lot. It happens in life and in politics,” Raut said.

“But the country has never seen this kind of politics. Our country has been under foreign rule for 150 years, but we have not seen this kind of political vendetta in the country. Even the enemies were treated fairly,” he said.

Raut claimed that the state was headed by Deputy CM Fadnavis and that the new government (Eknath Shinde-Fadnavis) had made some good decisions.

The ED had arrested Raut in a money laundering case related to the Patra Chawl redevelopment project.
