PM Modi targets Cong, says it must eschew ‘divide and conquer’ strategy to regain Gujarat’s trust

Prime Minister Narendra Modi again targeted the Congress on Monday over Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Medha Patkar’s participation in the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi, saying the opposition party should shun its “divide and conquer” strategy to boost trust of the people of Gujarat.

Speaking at a poll in Bhavnagar town of Palitana city in support of Bharatiya Janata Party candidates, Modi said that the people of Gujarat have rejected the Congress as the state has suffered a lot from the party’s policy of harassing people of a region or intercourse against another.

The people of Gujarat are not ready to help those who support “elements that want to break India”, he said.

Prime Minister Modi had also targeted Rahul Gandhi at his previous campaign rallies in Gujarat for walking with Medha Patkar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Elections for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly are scheduled for December 1 and 5, with vote counting to begin on December 8.

On Monday, Modi accused the Congress of trying to disrupt the access of Narmada water to the parched area of Saurashtra.

He said that the people of Gujarat will never forgive those who walked with a person responsible for shutting down Sardar Sarovar dam project for 40 years.

Further addressing the opposition party, the prime minister said: “The ideology of the Congress is to divide and rule. Before Gujarat became a separate state, the (Congress) made Gujaratis and Marathis fight against each other. Later, the Congress urged people of different castes and communities to fight against each other. Gujarat has suffered much from the sins of the Congress.” The smart people of Gujarat understood this strategy of the Congress and came together to open the door to such “divisive forces,” the Prime Minister said.

The situation changed after the BJP came to power, he said, adding that Gujarat has been on the path of development for the past 20 years.

“Congress is losing because the people of Gujarat have shown unity. The Congress should eschew casteism, communalism, vote bank politics and divide and rule (ideology) to regain the trust of the people of Gujarat as they are not at all ready to help those who support elements that want to break India,” the Prime Minister said. .
