‘Ready for legal battle’, says Bommai; Nodal ministers meet in Belagavi on December 3

Days after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the state “will not give an inch of land” in connection with the border dispute with Karnataka, CM Basavaraj Bommai said Karnataka is all set for a legal battle over the issue.

Bommai chaired a meeting with senior lawyers and officials on Sunday in the wake of the case set to be heard in the Supreme Court on Nov. 30, the news agency reported. ANI.

Maharashtra minister Chandrakant Patil said that the knot ministers of both states will travel to Belagavi on December 3 and that the government of Maharashtra has accepted an invitation from the Marathi organization in Belagavi. The minister added that a big and positive announcement is likely to follow after that.

“The petition filed by the State of Maharashtra regarding the border issue had no legal provision as it was filed on the basis of the State Reorganization Act and Article 3 (formation of new states and change of territories, borders or names of existing states) of the Constitution,” said Karnataka CM Bommai.

The CM also added that a team of well-trained counsel, led by Mukul Rohtagi and Uday Holla, will present the case.

Fadnavis earlier responded to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s allegation about a village in Maharashtra seeking to merge with its state.

Bommai had claimed that some village panchayats in Jat taluka of Sangli district of Maharashtra had passed a resolution in the past, seeking to merge with Karnataka as they faced a severe water crisis.

The Karnataka government, Bommai said, had devised plans to help them by providing water, and his government was seriously considering the proposal of Jat villages.

In response to these comments, Fadnavis said that currently none of the villages have filed such a demand and that “not a single village” of Maharashtra will go anywhere.
