Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called Sonia Gandhi’s leadership invaluable to the Congress party and said on Wednesday that the changing of the guard is an emotional moment for all party members. “When Sonia Gandhi took over the presidency of Congress in 1998, the party had no government in the Center and also had many challenges in the states. After she became party chairman, the congress won in all states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.
In 2004 and 2009, the UPA government was formed in the Center by defeating the BJP, he said. Veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge formally took over the presidency of the Congress on Wednesday and said the party will break the “system of lies and hatred” prevailing under the current administration.
Kharge, the first non-Gandhi to lead the party in 24 years, had defeated Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor in a direct contest for the post of the president in the big old party after the Gandhis opted out of the race. Gehlot also praised Sonia Gandhi’s spirit of sacrifice, affection and connection.
“Sonia ji even gave up the post of prime minister and always ran the party like a family. Because of this spirit of sacrifice, affection and belonging, the party united under her leadership and formed the UPA by forging alliances with many parties. “Those who opposed Sonia ji when she entered politics became her admirers. The departure of Sonia Gandhi as president of Congress is an emotional moment for all congressmen, he added. Gehlot, who attended Kharge’s swearing-in ceremony in Delhi, is scheduled for an election tour of Gujarat from October 28.
