The MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representing the Matar Assembly constituency in Gujarat’s Kheda district has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after the ruling party denied him a ticket to the upcoming parliamentary elections .
Kesarisinh Solanki, who had won the elections twice from the seat, joined the AAP, Gopal Italia, the president of the state unit led by Arvind Kejriwal, said on Twitter.
“Kesarisinh Solanki ji, a popular, hard-working, fearless MLA from Matar Vidhan Sabha, today joined Aam Aadmi party after taking inspiration from the honest politics of Arvind Kejriwal. I warmly welcome Shri Kesari Sinh ji to the Aam Aadmi party. Together we will form a fair government in Gujarat,” Italia said in a tweet late Thursday night. The tweet contained a photo of Italia welcoming Solanki.
The ruling BJP, which released its first list of 160 candidates for the state elections on Thursday, has named Kalpesh Parmar as a candidate for the Matar seat, who was represented by Solanki in 2014 and 2017.
Solanki had won the by-election for the seat in 2014 after the then MLA Devusinh Chauhan won the Lok Sabha election. Chauhan is currently the Union’s Minister of State for Communications.
Solanki had also won the 2017 Assembly election from the constituency on the BJP ticket.
The AAP has already named one Mahipatsinh Chauhan as the candidate for the seat.
