This young student’s dreams just came true! 16-year-old tribal girl Ritika Dhruw from the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh has been selected for the Asteroid Search campaign, organized by the International Astronomical Search Collaboration, in conjunction with NASA’s Citizen Science Project. How was she selected for this NASA project? According to a report by TOI, Ritika impressed the scientists of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC), Andhra Pradesh by her presentation on a black hole and this ensured that she was selected for the project. .
“Ritika had participated in the asteroid search campaign and was selected. Our curious young girl Ritika, who has had a great interest in space since childhood, shone. She represented the team and performed very well in Bilaspur,” Ami Rufus, her school principal, TOI told.
The 16-year-old will attend an asteroid-hunting camp at ISRO later in November 2022. The director further said that Ritika has been good and consistent in studying and used to attend online quizzes about space and asteroids.
Ritika is known to be an 11th student of Swami Atmanand Government English School (SAGES), Nayapara, Mahasamund which is 60 km from the capital Raipur. Ritika’s tremendous achievement can be measured by the fact that her father owns a bicycle repair shop.
