Elon Musk launches crackdown, orders Twitter layoffs starting today; 50% staff could lose jobs

Twitter will fire employees in an effort to move the social media platform on a more profitable path. View the details here.

After Elon Musk took charge of Twitter, the social media platform has gone through several changes, including the introduction of an $8 surcharge for the blue tick and an absolutely new work ethic that emphasizes long hours. Musk himself, in particular, has revealed that he works between 14-18 hours a day. And now, as promised by Musk, Twitter will start firing executives to get the social media platform on its profitable path. Twitter will email employees Friday whether they have been laid off, temporarily close offices and bar staff access, a Reuters report said. It has been reported that as many as 50% of staff can be shown the door.

In an email sent to staff, Twitter said it will alert employees to staff cuts at 9 a.m. Pacific Time (12 p.m. EDT/1600 GMT) Friday. “In an effort to put Twitter on a healthy path, Friday we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce,” the email sent Thursday said.

Twitter went on to say that its offices will be temporarily closed and all access to badges will be suspended to “help ensure the security of every employee, Twitter systems and customer data.” Twitter employees not affected by the layoffs will also be notified via their corporate email addresses. While the dismissed employees will be notified with next steps on their personal email address.

It should be noted that Twitter has not yet responded to a request for comment.

After Musk took control of Twitter, he ordered major cost cuts and imposed an aggressive new work ethic on the social media company. He has also directed Twitter’s teams to find up to $1 billion in annual infrastructure cost savings, according to two sources familiar with the matter and an internal Slack post. Musk also fired Twitter’s CEO and Twitter’s financial and legal executives last week.
