On Monday, South Africa was embroiled in a new racial outbreak after a white student was filmed peeing on a black student’s books and laptop at one of the country’s best universities.

Stellenbosch University, which called the incident “racist,” said it immediately dismissed the undergraduate student, whose name it did not name.

According to a video from a mobile phone that is being distributed on social networks, the man broke into the room of a black first-year student in an apartment building on Sunday before dawn and then urinated on his belongings.

The university “strongly condemns the devastating, harmful and racist incident,” Stellenbosch said in a statement.

Wim de Villiers, vice-chancellor of the university, said: “We are horrified by this type of behavior. Such behavior at the university will not be tolerated. ”

South Africa has been embroiled in a series of racial disputes that have uncovered deep divisions 28 years after the end of white minority rule.

The South African Student Congress said the victim was asleep “when he heard a noise in his room.”

“When he woke up, a white racist boy urinated on his desk, books and laptop,” the statement said.

Asked what he was doing, “the racist response was that this is what they are doing to black boys,” the statement said.

A representative student council of the university said the incident was an example of “the damage done to marginalized communities, and in this case, black students.”

Protests took place on campus on Monday, bringing together students of all races.

Many South Africans, including former students, have taken to social media to express their anger over Stellenbosch, with some saying the university – regularly considered one of the best in Africa – had a deep problem with elitism and racism.

De Villiers said in a statement: “We have acted quickly and decisively to support our commitment to a culture of inclusion.

“What happened … is unacceptable. No student has the right to degrade the human dignity or rights of another student in this way. “
