The continental showpiece selection trials, which will take place from October 30 to November 12 in Amman, Jordan, were held in NIS Patiala from Thursday to Saturday.
The likes of reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen, three-time Asian Championship medalist Amit Panghal and Birmingham Commonwealth Games medalists Rohit Tokas and Sagar Ahlawat skipped the tests.
While Zareen has missed the tournament to get some much-needed rest, Panghal, Tokas and Ahlawat have been nursed with injuries, a source from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) told PTI.
Thapa is a five-time Asian medalist. His loot includes one gold, two silver and as many bronze medals.
In the latest edition, he took a fifth consecutive medal, a silver, at the prestigious event, making him the most successful Indian male boxer in the tournament’s history.
The only other male boxer to hold five Asian Championship medals is Kazakh legend Vassiliy Levit, an Olympic silver medalist and two-time world bronze medalist.
Two-time Commonwealth bronze medalist Md. Hussamuddin (57 kg) is the other prominent name in the men’s team.
Borgohain will have a point to prove after getting through two disappointing tournaments – the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
The 24-year-old, who returned with a bronze medal in the latest edition, will compete in the 75kg weight class as she prepares for the Paris Olympics, which will not include her 69kg welterweight category.
