In his latest ICC review, Ponting made his five face-offs before the big event and one of them was the heated debate over who should be in the playing XI? Should it be a potential destroyer of the bowling attack Pant or the “designated finisher” Karthik?
“The debate in Indian cricket circles has long raged over who should be the designated wicketkeeper batter on the side. While Karthik can boast of being an excellent finisher, Pant’s prodigious talent has supported him by many,” Ponting wrote in his column.
India has played both on the same side on some occasions and Ponting believes this should be the way forward for Rohit Sharma’s team.
Ponting praised both, saying: “I actually think that the best team in India has both players. I don’t care if they are both goalkeepers, but I think their striking ability is enough.”
The Australian legend elaborated on their abilities, adding: “Rishabh in the middle order and Dinesh as the finisher, they look extremely dangerous to me.”
In the end, however, Ponting believed that Pant had an edge over Karthik and that he will probably get more chances.
“Look, I just prefer Rishabh because I think he might get a little more chances than Dinesh,” said Pant’s Delhi Capitals coach.
In case of a confrontation between Shaheen Shah Afridic and Jasper BumrahPonting thinks the Indian is a shadow ahead of the Pakistani.
“I’m probably just going by experience – I’m going for Bumrah. He has now played quite a bit of cricket in Australia, played more in Australia than Afridi and has also played more major tournaments than Afridi,” Ponting added.
