Senior BJP leader Dr. Subramanian Swamy met Gotabaya Rajapaksa here on Thursday, becoming the first foreign visitor to visit the deposed Sri Lankan president, after returning to Colombo after fleeing the country amid unprecedented protests against the ill-treatment of the country’s economy. island by his government. Swamy, a close friend of the Rajapaksa family who is in Sri Lanka to attend a conference of General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University on national security, also met Gotabaya’s brother Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday evening and attended the Navratri pooja in his home, sources said Thursday.
“Swamy, a close friend of the Rajapaksa brothers, attended Navaratri pooja at Mahinda Rajapaksa’s official residence last night before calling on Gotabaya Rajapaksa this morning,” sources said. Swamy is the first foreign visitor to visit Gotabaya since returning early this month from self-imposed exile following a violent nationwide protest for mishandling the country’s economy and causing an acute shortage of basic necessities.
Rajapaksa fled the country to the Maldives on July 13. Then he left for Singapore and then to Thailand. He is currently under heavy security in Colombo. Swamy, accompanied by a delegation including a battery of lawyers, will appeal to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Saturday.
