The Union minister said that in her early school days and up to university, learning Sanskrit was not easy at all because of the “political environment in which we lived”

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday regretted that Sanskrit learning is being discouraged in Tamil Nadu. She said that learning Sanskrit during her early education and while studying at university was not easy at all because of the “political environment we lived in.”

“And it’s not like I lived abroad. I lived in Tamil Nadu. Sanskrit was discouraged and I think they discourage even today,” said Sitharaman.

Despite that, she said her parents insisted on it and that she found a good teacher and learned “somewhat” Sanskrit privately.

“Learning Sanskrit or learning Hindi was not encouraged at all (in Tamil Nadu)…”, the minister said.

Sitharaman spoke at a function organized by ‘Karnataka Samskrit University’, on the occasion of Pre-graduate Convocation and ‘Sanskrit Week Celebration’. She said she is very proud to know that Karnataka as a state encourages the learning of Sanskrit.

The Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka said she was very impressed to know that more than 35,000 students across Karnataka are learning Sanskrit.

Sitharaman said that in the past seven to eight years, since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, several steps have been taken to develop, encourage and cultivate India’s rich and ancient language, including financial support for research projects and publications.
