Foreign Office spokesman Arindam Bagchi called the October 14 stabbing of an Indian student in Sydney an “unfortunate” incident and called for action against the perpetrators. Speaking at a press conference, Bagchi said: “We are aware of the incident. According to our information, he is in hospital and undergoing treatment. Our High Commission in Canberra and the Consulate in Sydney are in close contact with the local authorities. We are in contact with the family. Some of our officials met him at the hospital in Sydney. We have expanded our consular services. We have also learned that a suspect has been arrested. The Australian authorities will give you more details about an investigation. Our expectation is that it is taken seriously.”
