SpaceX is losing about $20 million a month by providing its Starlink satellite internet service to Ukraine, CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter.
The company does not receive any money from the US Department of Defense for providing the service, “but we will continue to do it,” Musk said in response to a user on Twitter, adding that several other countries, organizations and people are paying for terminals. .
Musk withdrew from Starlink funding requests last weekend after previously telling the Pentagon that the company could not indefinitely fund the system that helped Ukraine fight the Russian invasion.
The withdrawal of support for Starlink threatened to become an important means of communication used by the Ukrainian armed forces in areas that would otherwise have no mobile service.
Ukraine has 20,000 Starlink terminals that are evenly supplied by USAID, Poland, the European Union and private companies, according to an Oct. 5 report from state news agency Ukrinform citing data from the Ministry of Digitization.
