England halfback Courtney Winfield-Hill believes her squad can build on a “very special” opening win against Brazil as they do everything they can to reach the Rugby League World Cup.

Player of the match, Winfield-Hill scored a hat-trick in England’s dominant win over Brazil and admitted it was a moment to remember as they walked into the roaring crowd at Headingley, as stands packed with local schoolchildren cheered for the home nation.

“It was really special and I think that’s something the English rugby league fans are doing really well,” said Winfield-Hill.

“Especially here at Headingley, to hear that South Stand drum that really gave us a big boost through moments in that game, that was incredibly special.

“It was a big occasion today with the number of people in the crowd and the volume going off.

“It all adds up to it and now that we’ve experienced, maybe we can settle in a bit more and just put the mind on the line.”

Despite a resounding victory, Winfield-Hill believe England have a lot of areas to improve on if they are to secure their goal of winning the World Cup on home soil.

“Patchy is the word I would use to describe it,” she added.

“We were really good at certain patches, then we probably got a little excited and just lost touch with some basics.

“I’m sure Craig (Richards) and the coaching staff will get us back on track in the coming days.

“Georgia (Roche) and I have only been together in Leeds for a year and it was awkward at times, there’s no denying that for us.

“But it was also really good today to have some time with Zoe Harris and just have another partnership because we know that in this tournament everyone is going to play a part and there will be different combinations sometimes.”

On Saturday, England will experience another special moment as they play to a packed crowd in a double-header with the men’s team in Wigan, with Princess of Wales Kate Middleton attending the occasion.

“We just have to learn to gain momentum through basic skills. I think we lost on points there today and we know that’s because of discipline,” said Winfield-Hill.

“So, reinforcing a few basics is on the agenda and I’m really looking forward to the double-header with the guys building some great momentum themselves.

“That will be another very nice moment to be a part of.”
