New Zealand still in good position despite England loss: Mitchell Santner | Cricket News

New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner are confident his side can still progress to the next stage of the Twenty20 World Cup, despite their 20-run defeat to England in Brisbane on Tuesday.
The Black Caps, Australia’s second in 2021, will have to beat Ireland in their final Super 12 game in Adelaide on Friday to be sure of progress.
Ireland has already upset the tournament a few times by beating the West Indies to qualify for the Super 12 stage before beating England last week, but Santner says New Zealand should get the job done.
“I think we’re still in a pretty good position,” he said.
“We will of course think about what went well tonight, what didn’t go so well, and go to Ireland in a few days at a different wicket, in a different place.
“They showed us that they are a good side, so we have to shoot to beat them.”
New Zealand top group 1 ahead of England and Australia thanks to a superior net run rate with one round to go. Only the top two finishers advance to the semi-finals.
Ireland is two points off first place and can still go further with a win over the New Zealanders.
“We have seen during this tournament that there have been disruptions,” said Santner. “I think the nature of T20 cricket, if one or two guys show up on the day, they can run some sort of matches.
“So we know Ireland is a very good team. We’re not sure what Adelaide is going to give us, but we’ll do our preparation and see what we’ll play against and plan against a pretty good squad.” .”
