The autopsy examination of Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri, who was shot dead in broad daylight while participating in a protest, will be conducted Saturday at the Government Medical College here, officials said.
There has been heavy police deployment outside the postmortem home of the GMC. Later, the body will be handed over to Suri’s family for his final rituals, they said.
Five shots were fired at Suri, 58, on Friday during the protest outside a temple in a busy town in Amritsar. He collapsed after being shot and was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Suri protested the management of Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road – one of the busiest spots in the city – after some broken idols of Hindu gods were reportedly found along the road, which he called an act of sacrilege.
The suspect, Sandeep Singh alias Sunny, 31, was arrested and the weapon with a .32 bore used in the crime was seized. Police say he owns a clothing store near the protest site.
The officials said security around Suri’s home has been strengthened.
The police have also tightened security in many places in the city.
On Friday evening, the Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav visited the crime scene with senior officials and took stock of the situation.
