Breeders’ Cup: Victoria Road defeats Silver Knott in Juvenile Turf thriller at Keeneland as Aidan O’Brien celebrates double celebration | Racing News

Victoria Road saw success in the closing stages of a dramatic final race on day one of the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt cut through a crowded field in the $1 million Grade One Juvenile Turf and shot forward at the same time as Charlie Appleby’s Silver Knott was fighting from a boxed-in spot on the inner rail.

Silver Knott seemed to have taken the credit as he pushed forward once he found space, but Victoria Road flew past the outside.

The two horses struggled in the dying strides of the one-mile race, barely able to make out with the naked eye Victoria Road and Ryan Moore crossing the line first in the tightest finishes.

Moore said: “We were in a nice spot when the pace got more stable and they didn’t go crazy on the back straight.

“All the horses were in each other’s way and he managed to close a gap.

“He has been very progressive and has a lot of class.”

That completed a dramatic double on the night for O’Brien and Moore after Meditate’s dominant showing at the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The O’Brien-trained two-year-old, who settled in the back of the field under Moore, was patiently ridden from a relatively wide draw in Stable 10.

After the final corner, Moore asked the filly to gear up and she answered easily, sweeping past the leaders to take an easy win.
