Independent India’s first voter – Shyam Saran Negi – died on Saturday at the age of 106 at his home in Kalpa in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. By November 2, Negi had exercised his right to vote for the 34th time by using the ballot paper for the first time in the state elections scheduled to be voted on November 12. In his life, Negi had never missed an opportunity to vote. When the country’s first general election was announced, it was decided to vote in Kinnaur on October 25, 1951, given severe winters and early snowfall, while elections were held in other parts of the country in January-February 1952.
