79% voter turnout recorded in Panchayat polls, scuffle reported in a few areas

Nearly 80 percent of the turnout was registered in the second phase of the Haryana panchayat elections in nine districts on Saturday, according to data collected by the state election commission. The poll was conducted for the post of 2,683 sarpanches and 25,655 panches in 57 blocks of Ambala, Charkhi Dadri, Gurugram, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Rewari, Rohtak, Sirsa and Sonipat districts.

Voting started at 7:00 am and ended at 6:00 pm. Men, women and the elderly lined up at the polling booths in these districts to cast their votes.

In Karnal, there was a report of two rival groups clashing in the village of Fatehgarh in the Nissing block and three people were injured in the incident. The police arrived and brought the situation under control.

In Ambala, there was a scuffle between two groups in the village of Jansua after one of the groups objected to a vote being cast by a person. One person was injured in the scuffle and was admitted to the civilian hospital in Ambala City. The police said they are investigating the matter.

In Rohtak, there was a report of a fight between two warring groups in the village of Gharauthi. There was another report of a scuffle between two groups in the village of Kasauli in Rewari district.

There were 48,67,132 eligible voters in the second phase of the poll, officials said.

There were 5,963 polling stations in these districts, of which 976 were categorized as “sensitive” and 1,023 as “highly sensitive,” they said.

In the first phase, polls were held for zila parishioners and panchayat samitis in Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Mahendragarh, Nuh, Panchkula, Panipat and Yamunanagar on October 2 and the election of sarpanches and panches was voted on November 2.

The third and final phase of the poll in the remaining districts to elect members of zila parishad and panchayat samitis will be held on Nov. 22 and that of sarpanches and panches of gram panchayats on Nov. 25.

While the results of the sarpanch and panch polls will be announced at the end of the vote in each stage, those of the zila parishioners and panchayat samiti members will be announced on Nov. 27 after all three stages are completed.
