Nalini Sriharan, one of the six convicts released in the murder case of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, met Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in prison in 2008. About their interaction then Sriharan said she was asked about her father’s murder by daughter Priyanka. Sriharan also said that Priyanka had become emotional and cried when she met her in Vellore Central Prison more than a decade ago.
Sriharan told media on Sunday: “Priyanka Gandhi met me in prison and asked me about her father’s murder. She got emotional for her father. She cried too.”
Sriharan is the longest serving female prisoner to serve a life sentence. She was released from Vellore Prison on Saturday following a Supreme Court order on Friday releasing all six convicts, including RP Ravichandran.
Sriharan also said she is grateful to the Gandhi family for her release, and expressed a desire to meet them. Other things that came up during the meeting with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra cannot be revealed as it related to Priyanka’s personal views, she said.
At a press conference, Sriharan further urged the government of Tamil Nadu to take the necessary steps to release her husband from the Trichy Special camp as soon as possible.
“On Monday I am going to meet my husband at the Trichy Special camp. We are married and we have a child who lives on board. My daughter is so excited to meet her father. I really want to go see a few places in Tamil Nadu, mainly the late Kamala Sir Memorial. I can’t meet my husband yet, so I’m not happy at the moment.”
She told of her days in prison that the convicts were treated as death row inmates and although she was two months pregnant, she was locked up in prison.
“We were treated in prison like death row inmates. Even when I was two months pregnant, they locked me up in prison,” Sriharan said. Speaking about her future plans, she said: “Family will be my priority and I will not do anything professional. My whole life has already been totally destroyed, so I am going to take care of the family,” she added.
