All candidates from BJP, AAP, Cong File nominations amid heavy crowds on last day

Amid a huge rush, all 750 candidates from the three major parties in the national capital – the AAP, BJP and Congress – submitted their nominations for the upcoming Delhi polls on Monday, sources said.

November 14 was the last day for the submission of nominations for the high-stakes Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections for 250 wards.

The tabulation of data from submitted nominations is still ongoing, the source said.

“Due to the one-day rush, the nomination process for all candidates who arrived at 3:00 PM continued until late in the evening, and the process of uploading nomination documents is ongoing. As of 11pm, 2,048 nominations from 1,593 candidates have been uploaded, and the rest of the uploading will be completed soon,” an official source told PTI.

The process of receiving nominations was completely smooth and extensive arrangements had been made at all RO headquarters, he said.

Voting will take place on December 4 and the votes will be counted on December 7.

“All 750 candidates from AAP, BJP and Congress submitted their nominations today on the last day. Many independents have also submitted nominations alongside those of other parties,” another official source at the state election commission said here.

All three parties also confirmed that their 250 candidates have submitted papers for the same number of departments.

By Friday, only 35 nominations had been submitted since the process opened Nov. 7, officials said.

Of the 28 nominations submitted on Friday, 18 are male and 10 are female. Twenty of them were submitted by independents and eight by leaders of four political parties, including five from the BSP, a senior official had previously said.

Since no nomination papers had been received by returning officers on November 12 and 13 due to holidays, there was a huge rush for nominations to be submitted by candidates on Monday, officials said.

The Delhi BJP said all its 250 candidates have submitted their papers for the polls, accompanied by senior party leaders claiming that the saffron party will emerge victorious for the fourth time in a row.

The AAP and Congress also said their 250 250 candidates have each submitted the papers.

Examination of the nomination papers will take place on November 16, while the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is November 19.

BJP had announced its second list of 18 candidates in the early hours of Monday, replacing official candidates in nine wards just hours before the nomination process was completed.

Adesh Gupta, president of the Delhi BJP, spoke to party candidates in different districts and said here that the party will outperform in the previous MCD polls.

In the 2017 civil elections, the BJP had won 181 out of 270 branches. Votes could not be held on two seats due to the death of candidates. The AAP had won 48 divisions and Congress 27.

This will be the first citizens’ election after the new demarcation exercise, and the much-anticipated poll will be held in the gap between the two phases of Gujarat’s parliamentary elections, due to take place on December 1 and 5.
