West Bengal minister Akhil Giri is in the eye of the storm for his controversial comments about President Droupadi Murmu’s appearance

The Calcutta High Court has given permission to a lawyer to file a petition against TMC leader Akhil Giri’s remark about President Droupadi Murmu. West Bengal minister Akhil Giri has been in the eye of the storm for his controversial comments about President Droupadi Murmu’s appearance.

In a 17-second video clip, Giri was heard commenting on the president’s appearance and mocking the BJP.

“They (BJP) said I don’t look good. We don’t judge anyone by appearance. We respect the office of the President (of India). But what does our president look like?” Giri, Minister of State for Correctional Homes, was heard saying at a meeting in a village in Nandigram late Friday night.

After his comments were widely criticized, Giri apologized.

Attorney Sushmita Saha Dutta discussed her case before CJ’s Division Bench and urged the court to take note of the case, stating that such comments against the country’s constitutional chief “are tantamount to insulting the constitution and that the court must intervene as the state government is yet to take any action against the perpetrator”.
