NCP’s Lone MLA in State Resigns After Ticket Refusal

Kandhal Jadeja, the lone Gujarat MLA of the Nationalist Congress party, resigned from the party on Monday after it denied him a ticket to the upcoming state assembly polls.

Jadeja had submitted his nomination on November 11, despite having no party mandate.

He won from the Kutiyana seat in Porbandar district in 2012 and 2017 on the NCP ticket, but this time the seat has been kept outside the congressional NCP alliance.

Elections to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. In the first phase, 89 seats will be voted, including Kutiyana, while the remaining 93 seats will be voted on December 5.

In the latest Assembly polls, Jadeja had defeated both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress candidates, as the NCP had not entered into an alliance with Congress.

In a letter to Gujarat NCP chief Jayant Patel alias Jayant Boskey on Monday, Jadeja said he is resigning from all party posts and primary membership because he has been denied the ticket this time.

On November 11, the NCP and the Gujarat Congress concluded a pre-poll alliance in which the Sharad Pawar-led party will contest three seats – Umreth in Anand district, Naroda in Ahmedabad and Devgadh Baria in Dahod district – which are currently being held. held by the BJP.

That same day, Jadeja submitted his nomination papers for Kutiyana’s seat, claiming that he had received permission to do so from NCP’s National Vice President Praful Patel.

He had also radiated confidence that he would then receive the party mandate.

After the announcement of the seat deal, Congress had sent Natha Odedara from Kutiyana, as the seat was not part of the alliance.

There is a lot of speculation that Jadeja can now contest the election as an independent or submit a mandate from another party, as Monday is the last day to submit nominations for the first phase of the state polls to be held on December 1.
