On bail, former Maha minister Jitendra Awhad decides to resign after ‘fake cases’ against him

Former Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad, who was arrested last week for violently disrupting a theatrical screening of the Marathi film “Har Hard Mahadev”, announced his resignation on Monday.

Awhad called out the “fake cases” against him, took to Twitter and said: “the police have filed two bogus cases against me in the last 72 hours and that too under section 354 of the IPC. This is the murder of democracy. I will fight. I have decided to resign from my MLA position.”

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA was out on bail after being released by the Thane Sessions Court on Saturday. While granting him bail, the court asked him not to try to influence witnesses and appear before the Vartak Nagar Police Station when summoned.

Speaking to reporters after his release, Awhad defended his actions, saying that twisting history will send the wrong message to the future generation. “This has not only slandered the Maratha king, but also tarnished the image of the state and it will not be tolerated,” he said. PTIA reported.

Awhad was arrested along with 11 others last Friday by Thane police after they forcibly stopped the film at a theater in a shopping center in Thane city, alleging it distorted the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Apart from this, some people who attended the film were also beaten up when they protested the interruption, according to PTIA.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on the incident at Vartak Nagar Police Station under Sections 323 (Attack) and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (Deliberate Insult with intent to disturb the peace).

Awhad said he was ready to face the consequences for fighting the distortion of historical facts. “Presenting history in a distorted way will send the wrong message to the future generation and this must stop,” the NCP leader had previously said.

He claimed a conspiracy to discredit the Maratha warrior king and said the censorship board should verify the historical facts presented in a movie while giving a green signal.
