NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad gets anticipatory bail in assault case

A court here on Tuesday granted bail to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA and former Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad in an assault charge filed against him.

Sessions court judge PM Gupta granted the anticipatory bail of Rs 15,000 bond under certain conditions, the lawyer representing Awhad told reporters.

The prosecutor’s office opposed the plea, saying it is a sensitive matter.

Awhad’s lawyer said the charges against his client were politically motivated.

After midnight on Monday, Mumbra Police registered a case against Awhad under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (sexual assault or criminal violence against a woman with intent to violate her modesty) on the complaint of a woman.

The complainant alleged that the Mumbra-Kalwa MLA pushed her as he gave way to himself during the crowd dispersal after an event hosted by Prime Minister Eknath Shinde in Mumbra on Sunday night, according to the First Information Report (FIR).

Awhad denied the charges on Monday and announced he would resign in view of “fake” cases being registered against him.
