Ajay Making congress quit as leader of Rajasthan, hints at September uprising

Congress leader Ajay Maken stepped down as the leader of the party in Rajasthan on Wednesday according to sources, citing developments in late September when Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot refused to give up the CM post at the last minute to contest the election of the Congress president.

Maken wrote in a one-page letter to party chairman Mallikarjun Kharge on 8 November, expressing his reluctance to continue as the leader of Rajasthan.

According to sources, Maken was unhappy that the party took no action against the MLAs loyal to Gehlot, who had refused to attend an important party meeting, where the CM’s replacement would be chosen, and instead went to the Speaker to present their resigned in protest.

Gehlot had later publicly apologized for not passing the resolution and withdrew from the race for Congress president after meeting with then party chief Sonia Gandhi.

In his letter, Maken said it was “absolutely necessary to have a new leader as soon as possible” as the Bharat Jodo Yatra is coming to Rajasthan early next month and there is a bypoll on December 4.

“Married to the ideology of Congress for the last three generations and active in Congress politics for over 40 years, I will always remain an ardent follower of Rahul Ji, whom I trust and believe beyond words,” said Maken. .

According to sources, Maken stated that he wants to focus in Delhi through unions and NGOs.

He also plans to raise the issue of air pollution and fight for the rights of street vendors, slum dwellers and residents of unauthorized colonies, for whom he has previously made specific valuable contributions as minister, the sources said.
