Sena’s Sanjay Raut hints at cracks in MVA after Rahul’s Savarkar comments; Cong claims it won’t affect Alliance

Shiv Sena’s partnership with Congress in Maharashtra’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance could be jeopardized as Rahul Gandhi’s remarks against freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar have angered all political parties in the state. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Friday condemned the congress leader’s comments, saying he had no reason to comment on Savarkar, and this could lead to cracks in the MVA.

Speaking to reporters, Raut said defamatory remarks against Savarkar were unacceptable to the Shiv Sena. “There was no reason to raise the issue of Veer Savarkar. This could lead to cracks in the MVA as we idolize Veer Savarkar,” he said.

However, Congress denied the possibility of any fallout in the MVA alliance. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh defended Rahul Gandhi, saying he was not targeting the Hindutva ideologue, merely highlighting a “historical fact”, but also said it would not affect the MVA alliance.

The MVA alliance in Maharashtra consists of the Shiv Sena, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). However, Raut said that Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is getting good response across the country, especially in Maharashtra.

Rahul Gandhi’s controversial remark about VD Savarkar

Rahul Gandhi claimed at a press conference in Wadegaon in Akola district on Thursday that Savarkar had helped the British and written a petition for mercy out of fear. He had made similar comments two days earlier. Gandhi’s consistent attacks on Savarkar put Sena under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray in a spot.

“This (Gandhi’s comment) has influenced not only the Shiv Sena but also some Congress leaders in Maharashtra. People in Maharashtra and a large part of the people of the country have respect for Veer Savarkar,” Raut continued. Instead of retrieving history, Gandhi should create new history, the Sena leader said. “Savarkar was never an ideal for the RSS and BJP,” Raut said.

Such letters are also written by Mahatma Gandhi: Fadnavis on Savarkar Row

Amid the ongoing row over Rahul Gandhi’s comments on VD Savarkar, Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday that letters quoted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while making critical remarks against freedom fighter VD Savarkar were common during British rule and even Mahatma Gandhi used to write such misses.

At a rally in Bhavnagar ahead of next month’s parliamentary elections in Gujarat, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the Congress MP, saying he loves insulting national heroes except those of the Gandhi -Nehru family.
