The Delhi government built toilets in schools and counted them as classrooms, BJP claims

The BJP said on Friday that the vigilance directorate’s report on “irregularities” in the construction of classrooms in government schools in Delhi shows that Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal is only “concerned about black money flowing to him and not about children’s education”. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia cited the vigilance directorate’s report in the case alleging that “corrupt Gabbar” Kejriwal colluded with the private company “Babbar and Babbar” to build classrooms without issuing a tender, in violation of with the guidelines of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and Public Works Department (PWD).

The Delhi government increased the scale of construction work in schools without delaying any tender. They built toilets in schools and counted them as classrooms, Bhatia claimed.

“He (Kejriwal) is not worried about the future of the children. He is only concerned about one thing: the black money that is due to him,” he claimed.

The BJP leader claimed that the report shows that the private company has set the conditions for the construction of classrooms in consultation with the government.

“You did not fire the corrupt minister who is in prison. The vigilance report also exposed corruption in the education department. The Vigilance Directorate is part of the Delhi Government. Can your weak shoulders lift this burden? Can you fire the corrupt minister?” Bhatia said.

The vigilance directorate has recommended an investigation by a “specialized body” into alleged irregularities in the construction of classrooms for government schools in Delhi, claiming it was a “scam of Rs 1,300 crore”, official sources said on Friday.

A report from the Vigilance Directorate of the Delhi government recommending the investigation has been submitted to the chief secretary, they said.

The CVC highlighted “flagrant irregularities” in the construction of more than 2,400 classrooms in government schools in Delhi by the PWD in a report dated 17 February 2020.

The CVC had sent the report to the Vigilance Directorate of the Delhi Government in February 2020 to get comment on the matter.
