In a show of bonhomie during the campaign for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav touched his uncle Shivpal Yadav’s feet on Sunday, claiming that there has never been any tension in their relationship.
Speaking at an election rally in the family bastion of Saifai, Akhilesh Yadav also claimed that his party will score a historic victory in the bypoll.
Dimple Yadav, wife of Akhilesh Yadav, has been dismissed from the seat, which was represented by SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. The bypoll was prompted by Mulayam Singh’s death last month.
“The bypolls are taking place at a time when ‘netaji’ (Mulayam Singh Yadav) is not among us. The whole country is watching this election and I can say that the whole country will see the Samajwadi Party win a historic victory,” said Akhilesh Yadav.
After remaining at odds since 2017, Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle had decided to mend fences ahead of the 2022 polls. Both had formed a united front at the behest of Mulayam Singh Yadav. However, tensions reappeared after the poll saw the BJP return to power.
“Sometimes people say there is ‘dooriyaan’ (distance). There was no ‘dooriyaan’ between ‘chacha’ (uncle) and ‘bhatija’ (cousin). ‘Dooriyaan’ was there in politics. I had never considered a ‘dooriyaan’ between uncle and cousin. And I am glad that today the ‘dooriyaan’ in politics also ended,” said Akhilesh Yadav, remarks that drew applause from the audience.
“And that is why the BJP feels scared. It (BJP) knows that the people of Jaswantnagar (represented in UP Assembly by Shivpal Singh Yadav) have made a decision (to vote for SP), Karhal (represented by Akhilesh Yadav in UP Assembly) is also running (with SP ), and the people of Mainpuri have also made their decision (to go with the SP),’ the SP chief said.
During the polling campaign on Sunday, Akhilesh Yadav, PSP(L) chief Shivpal Singh Yadav and SP general secretary Ramgopal Yadav shared the podium.
Akhilesh Yadav last met with PSPL chief on Thursday along with his wife and party candidate Dimple Yadav.
In a tweet after the meeting, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Along with the blessings of Netaji and the elders of the family, the people of Mainpuri are also with us.” Akhilesh Yadav had also shared a photo with Shivpal Singh Yadav. Shivpal Yadav on Wednesday recently held a meeting with party workers and urged them to secure the SP candidate’s victory in the bypoll.
Shivpal Singh Yadav’s role in the election is important as his Jaswantnagar constituency comes under Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency.
Shivpal has a close relationship with the people of Mainpuri and acted as a representative of Mulayam in various programs held in the area when the SP patriarch was unavailable. The PSP(L) chief’s campaign in favor of Dimple is also considered significant as the BJP has nominated Raghuraj Singh Shakya, who was once a close associate of Shivpal Yadav, as a candidate for this seat.
The poll in Mainpuri will take place on December 5, while the counting of votes will take place on December 8.
The fight here is mainly between SP’s Dimple Yadav and BJP’s Raghuraj Singh Shakya.
Mainpuri parliamentary constituency has five assembly segments: Mainpuri, Bhongaon, Kishni, Karhal and Jaswant Nagar. In the 2022 parliamentary elections, the SP won the seats in Karhal, Kishni and Jaswant Nagar, while the BJP won the seats in Mainpuri and Bhogaon.
Akhilesh’s Karhal seat is part of the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, as is Jaswant Nagar, which is represented by Shivpal Yadav.
