Bajrang Punia becomes 1st Indian to win 4 medals at World Wrestling Championships, claims bronze in Belgrade | More sports news

BELGRADE (Serbia): Ace grappler Bajrang Punic became the only Indian to win four medals in the world wrestle Championships by getting bronze in the current edition on Sunday.
Bajrang, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year, took a close 11-9 points victory over Puerto Rico’s Sebastian C Rivera in one of the bronze medal fights.
Bajrang, who lost to John Michael Diakomihalis of the USA in the quarterfinals, qualified for the bronze medal match through a repechage, beating Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia by 7-6 points.

It is Bajrang’s third bronze at the World Cup. The celebrated Indian wrestler has previously won bronze in 2013, silver in 2018 and bronze in 2019.
India had drafted a 30-man team for the ongoing World Championships, but underperformed, taking only two medals.
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya had retired early and failed to take a podium finish.
In addition to Bajrang, Vinesh Phogat won her second World Championship bronze medal in the women’s 53 kg category.
Vinesh had beaten Emma Malmgren of Sweden 8-0 to claim the bronze here.
