Government warns Zoom users in India of major threat

The Indian government has warned of a serious security threat to Zoom users. It has asked everyone to update their app immediately.

A serious security threat warning has been issued to Zoom users of the video calling platform regarding a serious security threat. India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In) has issued an alert for several very serious vulnerabilities affecting the Zoom platform. The agency has identified a security vulnerability that allows attackers to join a meeting remotely without appearing to the other participants. The vulnerability has been marked ‘medium’ because it allows hackers to gain access to the victim’s computer. If successfully breached, hackers can access audio and video feeds of a meeting and “cause other disruptions to the meeting” without notifying participants. They can also obtain crucial information that is shared during the audio or video call.

According to the reports, three vulnerabilities, named CVE-2022-28758, CVE-2022-28759, and CVE-2022-28760, affect Zoom’s Local Meeting Connector MMR prior to version 4.8.20220815.130. Zoom exposed the vulnerability on September 13, and CERT-In issued the advisory on September 19 advising users to update their devices to the latest version of Zoom. Here’s how you can do it.

Recently, CERT-In flagged a serious security risk warning for Windows 10 and Windows 11 users regarding a serious security patch. The agency had warned that the vulnerability could affect Windows Defender, which protects Windows against malware, viruses, etc. The vulnerability was flagged as ‘serious’ because it allows hackers to gain access to the victim’s computer. It even bypasses the security restrictions.
