Ballon d’Or Adds Socrates Prize for Players Addressing Social Problems | Football news

BOULOGNE-BILLANCOURT (France): The Ballon d’Oro Organizers said on Wednesday they are adding a humanitarian award to this year’s ceremony, named after Socrates the elegant Brazilian midfielder, who also had a medical degree.
“The Socrates Prize will identify the best social initiative of dedicated champions,” said a statement from France football magazine, which awards the Ballon d’Or.
These initiatives will include initiatives that promote social inclusion, environmental protection or assistance to groups disadvantaged, threatened or victims of conflict.

France Football said they chose Socrates, who died in 2011 at the age of 57, for his commitment to a campaign he helped organize at his club, Corinthians in Sao Paulo, while Brazil was under a military dictatorship dubbed “Corinthian Democracy”.
While warned to stop meddling in political affairs, the players escaped with impunity for their high profile and for focusing on introducing democracy only to their club, insisting that decisions about how the club should be voted on. was controlled.
The award is presented by a jury made up of former Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Raiwho is Socrates’ younger brother, as well as representatives of France Football and leaders of the Monaco-based Peace and Sport organization.
“Socrates always believed in the power of sport to mobilize and transform society to make it more equal,” Rai said in a statement. “He has shown this as a player through his fight for the re-democratization of Brazil.
“Eleven years after his death, he remains the symbol of the champion who is committed to a more just world.”
The Ballon d’Or gala will take place in Paris on October 17.
