PM Narendra Modi declares National Games open; says favoritism, corruption-ridden sport in country earlier | More sports news

AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the 36th open National Games here on Thursday.
Indian athletes have been unable to perform well in the past due to favoritism and corruption, but his government has cleaned up the system, he said on this occasion.
Speaking during a gala ceremony in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera area he praised Indian athletes for winning medals in various international events like Olympic Games in recent times.

“The country’s athletes were also capable in the past. This movement of winning medals could have started earlier. But instead of professionalism, there was nepotism and corruption in the sport. We have cleaned up the system and renewed confidence in the youth pumped,” he said in his speech to the cheering crowd.
“Your victory in sport will pave the way for the country’s success in other areas. The soft power of sport will greatly improve our country’s image in the world,” he told the athletes.
