BJD leader Rajendra Das put all speculation to rest and submitted his nomination as an independent candidate for the by-election.

The political climate heated up Friday, weeks ahead of the Dhamnagar Assembly constituency by-election in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Nov. 3, after a high-ranking BJD leader submitted the nomination as an independent candidate, signaling a power struggle in the ruling party in Odisha.

BJD leader Rajendra Das put all speculation to rest and submitted his nomination as an independent candidate for the by-election.

The announcement came after the BJD fielded Abanti Das as a candidate for Thursday’s upcoming midterm elections. After the decision, Das had written a letter expressing his anger at being ignored. According to information, the senior BJD leader was present when the party announced its candidate and agreed to its decision.

However, the day after the party’s announcement, Das’ move to apply for nomination as an independent candidate sparked speculation in political circles.

Das said, ‘I will fight the by-election with the blessing of the people to serve Dhamanagar. I have worked for the people of Dhamanagar for the past few years. I am always next to people. They have sympathy for me and I am confident that I will win.”

Meanwhile, the state BJP has arrested Suryabanshi Suraj, the son of the late Bishnu Charan Sethi. Suraj submitted his nomination on Tuesday. Congress announced Baba Harekrushna Sethi as a candidate on Wednesday. Sethi, a lawyer by profession, thanked interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi and OPCC president Sarat Pattnayak for nominating him as a party candidate in the Dhamnagar poll.

The by-election was necessary after the death of BJP MLA Bishnu Charan Das on September 19.
