Bihar CM Nitish lashes out at BJP over cases against Lalu

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stated on Friday that he will not realign with the BJP as long as he lives, accusing the former ally of using investigative agencies to attack political opponents such as RJD president Lalu Prasad. At a meeting in this northern district of Bihar where he opened a government technical college, Kumar accused the current BJP leadership of arrogance and fondly recalled the era of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.

“They filed a case against Lalu ji, which caused me to cut my ties with him. Nothing came out. And now that we are back together, they are filing new cases. You can find out how these people function,” Kumar told the meeting, without naming the BJP. Prasad was named a few years ago in an IRCTC country for hotel scams, in which his son Tejashwi Yadav, who was then serving his first term as deputy CM, was also named an accused. This had upset Kumar, who values his reputation for personal honesty, and led to his return to the NDA.

The RJD president and his family members were recently indicted in another country for a job scam, related to Prasad’s tenure as railway minister in the UPA-1 government. “So different were the leaders of the same party from the past, such as former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in whose cabinet I was privileged to work, and LK Advani, who was then Deputy Prime Minister. I also have fond memories of Murli Manohar Joshi who honored my request to upgrade my alma mater, the Bihar Engineering College, as a National Institute of Technology,” said Kumar.

“Those who are currently at the helm, on the other hand, don’t listen to anyone and have little respect for a person and his or her concerns. I want to claim that I will not come back to them as long as I live,” the JD said. (U) leader, who dumped the BJP two months ago on charges of trying to split his party. Referring to the multi-party ‘Mahagathbandhan’ he has joined, including RJD, Congress and three left-wing parties, Kumar vowed, “We are all socialists out of conviction. We will stick together and work for the advancement of the nation”.

After severing ties with the BJP, Bihar’s longest-serving prime minister has become a strong proponent of “unity of the opposition” and claims it would ensure the defeat of the BJP, which currently looks formidable.
