Congress Prez Poll neutral? ‘Official’ candidate Kharge walks with Rahul in Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka’s home state

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who is said to be supported by the Gandhi family in the party presidential election race against Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, was seen with Rahul Gandhi at the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka on Saturday. It is the first time that Kharge participates in the Bharat Jodo Yatra being in his home state for more than 10 days.

earlier PTIA had reported that 80-year-old Kharge, along with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, stayed away from the Bharat Jodo Yatra in his home state of Karnataka, as the party is keen to underline the impartiality in the presidential polls.

Other party leaders DK Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah, KC Venugopal and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel were also seen in the padyatra today.

Previously, Congressional presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor debunked suggestions that his rival Mallikarjun Kharge had been backed by the Nehru-Gandhi family, who would continue to hold the reins of the party no matter who was elected to the top post.

This is the 38th day of the 3,570 km Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and will end in Jammu and Kashmir. The padyatra, which has traveled 600 km through the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, will traverse Karnataka until October 20 before migrating to Telangana.

The Congressional presidential election will take place on October 17. The votes will be counted on October 19 and the results will be announced the same day. More than 9,000 delegates from the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) will vote in the poll.

Rahul Gandhi had previously dismissed claims that the next president of Congress would be “remotely controlled” by his family, saying that both contenders – Kharge and Tharoor – are people of stature and understanding and that it was offensive to them to do so. to make a suggestion.

Tharoor, a former diplomat, has pledged to bring changes to the party, saying leaders like Kharge cannot bring change and will continue the system. On the other hand, Kharge said there is a struggle against the RSS and the BJP, but not among us.

Even if one of the two – Kharge or Tharoor – withdraws his candidacy, it is certain that a non-Gandhi family leader will take the reins of Congress in two decades.

In the more than 130-year-old party’s history, Sonia Gandhi remains the longest-serving party chairman. She took control of the party from Sitaram Kesri after the Lok Sabha polls of 1998 and has been at the helm ever since, except for a two-year period between 2017-19 when Rahul Gandhi became Congress president.

The last poll took place in November 2000 when Sonia Gandhi defeated Jitendra Prasada by a margin.
