“A decision has yet to be made on the inclusion of I-League winners in ISL,” said AIFF Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran

Shaji Prabhakaran, secretary general of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), said on Friday that AIFF’s legal team is working on the terms and conditions to pave the way for the I-League winner’s inclusion in the Indian Super League (ISL).

In 2019, the AIFF had assured the I-League clubs that the winner of the league would be promoted to the ISL from the 2022-23 season, meaning the team that won the I-League from 2022-23 will be promoted to the 2023 will play. -24 ISL. The AIFF had also promised that there would be promotion relegation between the two leagues.

On Friday, AIFF’s secretary general said it will take some time as the new legal team reviews all the details and documents related to the matter. However, he assured that an update on the matter will be shared in the coming days.

Asked about the promotion plans of the I-League 2022-23 winners to the ISL, Prabhakaran said: “We’ll come back to that. Our legal team is working on the terms and regulations and we should share an update with everyone in the coming days.”

Ahead of the start of the 2022-23 I-League season, Prabhakaran announced that the competition will be broadcast on the DD Sports and Eurosport channels and will also be streamed live on the Discovery+ OTT platform.

“It’s a big thing because this hasn’t happened before. Thanks to our partner Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) we have been able to guarantee good quality coverage for the I-League. The fact that we will have the Hero I-League on two channels and on Discovery+ is an encouraging sign for Indian football and for the clubs, which will become more visible,” he said.

“We have decided that for the next season everything should be completed by the end of the season. So that the clubs can get the best out of everything. And today with better broadcasting and better reach, you can better engage fans,” he added ready.

Prabhakaran said of the League Committee meeting: “We had fruitful discussions in the League Committee meeting, and there was special emphasis on women’s football. We all felt that we should encourage more women’s clubs to play at a local level, which would ultimately take women’s football in India to greater heights in the future.”
