Congress wants to oust the BJP from government in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, where the saffron party has been in power for more than two decades.

Congress on Friday announced its first list of 43 candidates for the 182-member Gujarat assembly elections, which will be held in two phases – December 1 and 5 – with votes counting on December 8. This comes hours after party chairman Mallikarjun Kharge chaired a meeting of the party’s Central Election Commission (CEC) in Delhi, where several candidates for the upcoming polls were finalized.

According to the released list, Arjun Modhwadiya, former head of Gujarat Congress, from Porbandar, Himanshu Patel from Gandhinagar South and Hiteshbhai Vora from Rajkot South have been taken.

Former Congress Head Sonia Gandhi attended the meeting online, while the rest of the participants attended it physically at the AICC headquarters in the national capital.

Among those in attendance were CEC members and party secretaries Mukul Wasnik and KC Venugopal, in addition to Mohsina Kidwai, Girija Vyas and Ambika Soni. The All India Congress Committee (AICC), responsible for Gujarat Raghu Sharma, and the head of the party’s state unit, Jagdish Thakor, were also present.
