Breeders’ Cup: William Buick moves from last to first on Mischief Magic in Juvenile Turf Sprint to give Charlie Appleby four in a row | Racing News

British champion jockey William Buick produced a masterclass in patience from last to first to win the Grade Juvenile Turf Sprint at Mischief Magic.

Buick was knocked back five furlongs early in the match and tried to get down the inside of the rail, but found more traffic ahead of him when Hollie Doyle on The Platinum Queen tried to pick up the pace.

She soon faltered as Ryan Moore passed the railing on Dramatized to hit the front, chased on the outside by Richard Hannon’s Persian force.

Mischief Magic still had a lot of chase and Buick finally got a run through as the field went into the final straight.

However, Buick had to use all his might to get past Dramatized and Private Creed’s late outburst, to win by a length.

It was a remarkable fourth consecutive Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Charlie Appleby, extending his overall record to seven wins from 12 runners at the meeting.

Appleby told Sky Sports Racing: “I knew they were going to go fast.

“William was in such great shape and riding with so much confidence, I could see what he was doing. He was trying to get him on the leash and he got him on the leash on the back corner there, I could see where he was trying to tip out and was just pushed back in.

“I don’t think it did any harm to the horse because as I said to Will just give him holes, he just needs daylight and he might have a chance. A great ride from William, I’m delighted. It’s great to come back.”
